You can track shared expenses as a couple without opening a joint bank account. Goodbudget, Splitwise, Honeydue, Splitt, and Spendimo offer different ways to record household costs while keeping your bank accounts separate. The right choice depends on whether you want to plan a budget, track who paid, or share selected expenses.

Separate bank accounts do not automatically mean separate visibility inside an app. Check which records your partner can see, how sharing works, and which features require a subscription.

This comparison is published by Spendimo. We reviewed the linked product documentation on 23 September 2026; we have not independently tested all five apps. Prices and availability can vary by region and change over time.

What to look for in an expense tracker for couples

  • Sharing controls: Decide whether you want one household view or selected shared records alongside private purchases.
  • Your preferred entry method: Manual entry, receipt scanning, and optional bank imports involve different amounts of work. Check what each app supports and what data it stores.
  • Tracking or budgeting: Expense tracking shows what you spent. Budgeting allocates money or sets limits before you spend it. Category reports alone are not a budgeting system.
  • Costs for both partners: Check daily entry limits, history limits, and whether sharing needs one subscription or two.
  • Device and offline support: Both partners need a compatible device. Recording an expense offline and sending it to your partner are separate capabilities.

1. Goodbudget: for envelope budgeting

Goodbudget suits couples who want to allocate money to spending categories before making purchases. Its free plan includes 10 regular envelopes, 10 additional envelopes, one account, and two devices. Premium expands those limits and adds optional bank sync for US banks.

Consider it if: You want an envelope system for planning household spending. Check the account and device limits against the way you intend to organize your finances. See Goodbudget’s plans and pricing.

2. Splitwise: for shared expenses and balances

Splitwise focuses on recording shared costs and tracking balances between people. Its documentation currently lists a limit of four expenses per day for free users. Pro removes that limit and includes receipt scanning, currency conversion, and spending charts by category.

Consider it if: Tracking shared balances is your priority. Compare the free limit with your usual number of entries, and check current Pro pricing for your region. See Splitwise’s Pro feature guide.

3. Honeydue: for a shared financial overview

Honeydue combines couples’ account tracking, budgets, and bill reminders. Its support documentation explains how to add an account manually without a bank login. It also describes controls for sharing balances, transactions, or neither, including hiding individual transactions.

Consider it if: You want a broader household view with adjustable visibility. Check local availability and bank support if you plan to use automatic imports. The manual-account and sharing guides date from 2019; this comparison reflects their documented behavior. Its US App Store listing shows a free download with in-app purchases.

4. Splitt: for a browser-based couples tracker

Splitt’s pricing page describes a web app for two people with offline support and no required bank connection. Its free plan includes unlimited entries, recurring expenses, savings goals, some ads, and 90 days of history. Premium adds unlimited history and removes ads.

Consider it if: You prefer using a browser and the free history limit suits you. Check the Splitt pricing page for the current plans.

5. Spendimo: for selected sharing on iPhone and iPad

Spendimo lets you record personal expenses and income without a bank connection. Free features include single receipt scanning, recurring entries, basic monthly trends, and CSV export. Pro adds sync, partner sharing, and advanced insights.

One Pro subscription covers both partners, who use separate accounts. You choose which expenses to share and how to split them. Your partner can approve or dispute a shared record; private entries and personal totals stay private.

Consider it if: You use iPhone or iPad and want personal tracking with selected shared expenses. Spendimo requires iOS 26 or iPadOS 26 or later. It does not set spending budgets, connect to your bank, or transfer money. Partner updates need an internet connection.

How Spendimo stores your records

Receipt scanning runs on your device. Without Pro sync, financial entries stay on that device. Pro sync stores entries in your account on our server in Germany.

Receipt photos stay on the device unless you enable optional Pro receipt sync, which is off by default. Enabling it can also upload eligible saved receipts. A synced photo on a shared record can be viewed by your partner. Turning receipt sync off stops new uploads but does not delete existing server copies. Read our Privacy Policy for storage, deletion, and backup retention details.

Which app fits your household?

Start with the job you need the app to do. Goodbudget is an option for envelope planning; Splitwise for shared balances; Honeydue for a household financial overview; Splitt for a browser-based couples tracker; and Spendimo for personal tracking with selected partner sharing on Apple devices. Check the relevant sharing settings together before adding personal records.

Once you have chosen a tool, agree which costs you will share and how you will divide them. Our guide to splitting expenses without a joint account covers practical methods, including equal and income-based splits.

If Spendimo fits your needs, download Spendimo from the App Store. You can try personal tracking for free and review Pro pricing in the app before subscribing.

Frequently asked questions

Can couples track expenses without linking bank accounts?

Yes. All five apps discussed here offer ways to record expenses without a required bank connection, based on the documentation reviewed. Manual entry avoids importing bank transactions, but privacy also depends on the app’s storage and sharing settings.

How can we keep personal spending private?

Choose an app with sharing controls that match your needs, then check those settings together. In Spendimo, only the records you choose to share are visible to your partner; your private entries and personal totals remain private. Account sync and partner visibility are different: a synced personal record is not automatically shared with your partner.

What is a good Splitwise alternative for couples?

It depends on why you want to switch. Compare Goodbudget for envelope planning, Honeydue for a broader financial overview, Splitt for browser-based tracking, or Spendimo for selected sharing on iPhone and iPad. Splitwise Pro itself includes category charts and receipt scanning, so compare the features and costs you will actually use.
